CO2 Separation & Use

The main focus is investigating innovative methods to separate and utilize CO₂ from gas mixtures. One possible solution is the absorption of CO₂ out of flue gas. Here the optimization of absorption materials is necessary to capture highly concentrated CO₂, which can then subsequently serve as a carbon source in chemical production. Algae offer another possibility to separate CO₂ out of gas mixtures. As they grow 7 – 10 times faster than typical bioenergy crops they can assimilate much more CO₂ that could be used for the conversion into higher value products.

Through these measures, CO₂ emissions can be returned back into biological or chemical synthesis pathways. Examples of possible application areas are transportation fuels, synthetic fertilizers, bulk chemicals and animal feeds.
