How to evaluate the ecological impact of our processes and products?

According to the ISO14044 series, all major energy and material flows in products or processes are assigned and assessed for their ecological impact. Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) are used to evaluate the total impact on the environment. Thereby the determination of the general climatic factor “carbon footprint” is one of the core impact factor.

The goals of the LCA group are to formulate a company wide evaluation standard, to evaluate Evonik products and processes with regard to their sustainability, and to determine the company wide carbon footprint. Here measures to reduce the environmental impacts of products and processes can be ascertained and facilitate the objective comparison of processes.

Product related LCA’s are focused upon analyzing and quantifying the CO₂ savings incurred both in Evonik processes and by customers using Evonik products.

During the developmental phase, the evaluation of all new and innovative methods to increase the energy efficiency within S2B Eco² is complimented by means of a LCA.
