Low cost flexible solar cells

For tomorrow’s photovoltaics

Photovoltaics is the most environmentally friendly regenerative energy supply of the future. Solar energy is emission-free. It is always available, independent of suppliers and international political circumstances. The European Union has outlined the goal of providing 20% of the EU-wide energy consumption by regenerative energy until 2020 – a big step forward for the environment and a huge market.

The market for photovoltaics already has a significant volume of approx. EUR 14bn (2007) and tremendous average growth rates of more than 40%. The challenge lies in making photovoltaics more cost-efficient and economic, so as to integrate it into daily life in a more flexible and easy way. This is exactly where our project “low cost and flexible solar cells” comes into play.

This project was financially supported by the state of NRW and co-financed by the European Union.

Our targets are:
  • to build a new business in the market for economic thin-layer photovoltaic (cost target: < 1 Euro/WattPeak)
  • new material for efficient production processes in photovoltaics
  • ecologically safe material for photovoltaics not subject to resource limitations

We rely on
  • a multi-year expertise in the development and characterisation of new nano material for electronic applications
  • production know-how for valuation, development and installation of new production methods
  • an international research network in the field of photovoltaics.
