Life Cycle Management

The Life Cycle Management (LCM) group is part of the Science-to-Business Center Eco2 (S2B Eco2) that was established in 2008.

The LCM-group combines all strategic research activities of Evonik in the areas of energy efficiency and climate protection. It defines itself as a neutral and strategic partner for sustainability and supports the corresponding activities of the company in numerous ways through its multidisciplinary function.

  • At the corporate level, the group is in charge of compiling the Evonik Carbon Footprint, which has been calculated in accordance with the internationally recognized scope concept of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Initiative since 2008.
  • At the product and process level, the LCM-group supports the business units and business lines of Evonik with the performance of life cycle assessments (LCA). This work is based on the ISO standards 14040/14044 for eco balance sheets. A large portion of the Evonik product portfolio has already been examined and analyzed.
  • In research and development, the analysis of the greenhouse gas savings potential of all innovation projects in the S2B Eco2 represents an elementary portion of project assessments performed. The so-called Carbon Footprint Estimation (CFE) model was developed as a standardized and externally validated method for assessing innovations in very early project stages.
  • The LCM-group functions as a competence center that establishes internal Evonik standards for carrying out eco balance assessments and for evaluating and measuring sustainability. Best Practice examples are published on a multi-unit basis, and participation in committees and research projects ensures external networking.

The work of the LCM-group benefits many areas of the Group, including corporate functions, research and development, sales and marketing, engineering, and procurement.

Our mission:
We support Evonik on its way to greater sustainability. We use current, recognized, and standardized methods for quantifying and measuring individual sustainability categories and support the company in its efforts to make the right decisions for measurably greater sustainability.

The LCM-group includes employees with different training and professional backgrounds. At its core are engineers with knowledge in the compilation of volume and energy balances, which are an important prerequisite for eco balance sheets. In organizational terms, the employees of the LCM-group work for the Process Technology and Engineering Service Unit. The group currently comprises eight staff members and continues to grow.
