Using an interdisciplinary approach, the unit combines expertise in chemistry, material science and process engineering with a profound understanding of customer requirements, supply chains, and potential target markets. An in-depth understanding of structure-property relationships of membrane materials is required to optimize the performance of molecular separation processes. In addition to Evonik’s various technology and material platforms, this effort also makes intensive use of cooperation with academic and industrial partners. The unit works closely with the Resource Efficiency Segment to systematically expand the competencies of Evonik in the area of membrane materials and to open up growth opportunities for new markets and market segments.
The focus of the innovation field is currently on new material and membrane concepts for gas separation as well as ion-conducting membranes for electrolytic hydrogen production. Moreover, new competencies in the area of membrane production, functionalization and characterization are being developed together with the Science & Technology unit. This includes, for example, the establishment of methods for electrochemical characterization of ion-conducting membranes to enable the application-oriented evaluation and qualification of this material class.
Creavis’ Membranes Innovation Field therefore provides a portfolio of projects and competencies to consistently support one of the strategic innovation and growth fields.
